US and China to discuss AI policy in upcoming talks: report

The United States and China plan to hold talks on artificial intelligence  in September, according to a report by Reuters that cited people familar with the matter. As per the report, the talks will revolve around both nations' approach to safely managing advanced frontier AI models.

This will be the first official AI meeting between the two countries under President Donald Trump, states the Reuters report. It will likely take place before Chinese President Xi Jinping visits the US on 24 September. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the American team.

Although preparations are underway, the exact agenda, location, and full list of participants have not yet been confirmed. Officials from both sides are still working through internal discussions.

As per Reuters, both nations are worried about the fast pace of the AI race. They want to tackle potential risks to military power, cyberattacks, and labour markets. Bessent also pointed to concerns about intellectual property, noting that digital watermarks from US models have been found in Chinese systems.

China prefers direct technical talks over political debates, states the Reuters report. Experts say the first meeting probably will not fix major issues, but it could help both sides agree on simple ground rules, such as how to define an advanced AI model.
