World Hello Day 2013

The World Hello Day 2013 will be celebrated on November 21. This day is observed in nearly 200 countries of the world. The event of the day includes saying 'hello' to at least ten people. The objective is to make the world leaders conscious about using communications instead of applying force to settle conflicts and maintain world peace. The word 'hello' is the most used word in the world which is used to start a conversation, greet people, answer phone calls, etc. But there are some different thoughts concerning the etymology of the word 'hello'. Some say hello was the name of the girlfriend (Margaret Hello) of Graham Bell who invented the telephone. But as history reveals, Bell's girlfriend in 1873 was Mabel Hubbard whom he married in 1877. The telephone was patented in 1876. Further, Bell's salutation for the phone was “hoy hoy”. It was in fact Thomas Edison who used “hell-o” as greeting for the phone. The word 'hello' has come from the word hallo via hollo (1840). Professor M Zahidul Haque Dean, Faculty of Agriculture SAU, Dhaka
