Remembering the Pop Guru
Azam Khan, a freedom fighter, singer, composer and guitarist, known as the “Pop Guru” whose popularity transcended generations of music in Bangladesh. He was the lead singer of Uchcharan which was the first rock band of Bangladesh. We remember this great artist on his 3rd death anniversary.
Azam Khan was born in 28th February, 1950
His full name was Muhammad Mahbubul Huq Khan
Azam's family was one of Dhaka's old inhabitants and Azam was raised in his ancestral home at Dhaka's Kamlapur area
Inspired by his singer mother, he started his musical life during his high school years
Azam Khan actively participated in the liberation war of 1971
He fought against the Pakistan army in the 2nd sector under the command of Brigadier Khaled Mosharraf
He received guerrilla training at Melaghar in India's Tripura state
After the war he started his music career professionally and formed Bangladesh’s first rock band Uchcharan in 1972

By 1974 he became immensely popular all over Bangladesh for his unique style, lyrics and music
He was a close friend of popular singer Fakir Alamgir, Pilu Momtaz and Ferdous Wahid and performed many times together
Khan launched 17 CDs and audio cassettes of his creations
Azam Khan used to play first class cricket as a member of Gopibagh Friends' Club
In 1986 Azam Khan starred as a villain in a Bengali cinema
He was often referred to by the honorific nickname Pop Guru of Bangladesh
Azam Khan died of cancer on June 5 2011 at the age of 61
