Owning a car in Bangladesh is either out of necessity or out of desire. You can't fully appreciate the necessity factor because once you use the car to go on errands, you face numerous problems. Did everybody decide to come out today and get stuck? If something is moving, why are the other vehicles trying to ram you consciously, unconsciously or otherwise? Bus drivers are required to be awake while driving. And if you ever manage to get to your destination, where to park? If you've parked successfully, where do you go to buy your side mirrors because someone has just stolen them? And those that love cars and bikes, it's a whole different ball game. Can't go anywhere there isn't safe parking. And in Dhaka, there is no place for people to even remain dead for a couple of days, never mind parking a car. You die, people will come by asking you to move.
So this week, we start our regular 'How-To' section called Shift Garage. We discuss tips on how to survive the onslaught of the world and work out any and all issues you might have regarding cars and bikes. Hit us with your queries.
