A Night of December

M
Mirza Sabbir Hossain Beg

I walked across the city streets,

Dark and cold, in thousand lights.

I saw Trojan love of deceits,

Under the moon of many nights.

I came across a house,

Where love’s fools with pleasure meet.

In silence they gather their feet,

And leave quiet as a mouse.

I roamed the streets in search for light.

I heard weeping of a soul,

Not knowing what stained her heart so bright.

Life takes its toll on us all!

Alone, I walked and walked, till

Dawn began to swallow the moon;

I stopped my feet, standing still.

The dawn had brought the finest boon.

It seemed to me like a mountain fire,

Blazing in its path all its grass and trees,

When I began to think it couldn’t be so dire,

And my heart would in sorrows increase.

It was a night of December,

Full of cold and gloom and death.

Though with awe and joy I remember,

The rising sun and its tender breath.
