Arnold is back in the role that made him an action hero!
Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been larger than life. First he was the pumped-up Austrian who muscled his way into winning not one but five Mr Universe bodybuilding championships. Then he used that body and his charm to make his mark in Hollywood and become one of the biggest box office stars in the business.
Films such as Conan The Barbarian, Twins, Total Recall, Predator, Kindergarten Cop and many more may be part of the Schwarzenegger legend, but nothing says Arnie like leathers, Aviators and the line, "I'll be back". Terminator turned Arnie, 67, into the ultimate action hero, full to the brim with that unique, ironic-macho swagger.
He made a lot of movies, signed a lot of autographs, then tried his hand at politics and served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. But Arnie will never slow down. He's a machine, after all. They say all good things come to an end, but luckily the Terminator franchise disagrees. It's back, bigger and better than before, with Terminator Genisys. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys in Game Of Thrones) is Sarah Connor and we couldn't be more excited.
Arnie said: "It's great to be back. Especially knowing that usually studios switch out actors. How many James Bonds have we had? And Batman and Spider-Man? That could have been the case with the Terminator. But they didn't, so I felt honoured".
"The technology has evolved – there are a lot of things in this movie we would not have been able to do before. But they still have a difficult time doing it. Like recreating me as the younger 1984 version of Terminator, it's very, very difficult to do because you don't take frames out of the original film, you create that character from nothing. I had to do endless hours and days in front of the camera to do a thousand different facial expressions and body movements, so they can mimic it through special effects. The things we can do today that we were not able to do before are what makes it really powerful. Think about it, having this whole scene with me meeting old me… it's spectacular," says Arnie.
Arnie still trains hard, so stepping up to the plate for the action scenes wasn't anything exceptional. But he admits the cool stuff on screen is achieved by hours of tedium. "All the stuff that looks cool, it's actually tedious. You're in a harness, you get thrown around, you bang into things – you get dropped by accident. They're always tough work, these action movies. But they turn out fantastic".
He said: "I never took myself too seriously. What I did take seriously was the issues I tackled. To me, life is all about hard work. My father always said to me, 'Be useful'. It's important to do something bigger than you are but have a good time at the same time. I refuse to dwell on the negative. It won't change anything. You need to move forward, become a better man, do greater things. It's counter-productive to indulge in suffering and guilt. I will always go forward in life."
Then, of course, there's the accent and the iconic lines he's constantly asked to utter. Is that fun or is he just being nice when saying, "I'll be back" 200 times a day? He said: "I'm trying to be nice. I don't even know why certain phrases become popular. When I said, 'I'll be back,' I didn't have the foggiest idea it would become the most quoted line in movie history. Like, 'Get to the chopper!' in Predator. People always ask me to say it. I mean, what's funny about that? Probably the way I pronounce chopper."
"The interesting thing is when I wanted to go from bodybuilding into movies I was told, 'You'll never become a leading man because of your accent."
