Bangladesh pace unit ‘slightly ahead’ of Pakistan, says Shanto

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said his pace unit is currently ‘slightly ahead’ of Pakistan’s, reflecting growing confidence in Bangladesh’s fast-bowling department ahead of the upcoming Test series in Mirpur.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on the eve of the first Test of the two-match series, starting May 8 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Shanto drew a direct comparison between the two pace attacks while acknowledging Pakistan’s traditional strength in fast bowling.

“Pakistan’s pace bowling is traditionally very strong; there is no doubt about that,” Shanto said. “However, considering how our pacers have performed over the last few years, I would say our pace attack is perhaps slightly ahead.”

His remarks come against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s historic Test series win in Pakistan in 2024 under the World Test Championship cycle, a triumph largely driven by their seamers. In that series, the Bangladesh pace quartet of Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam combined to claim 21 wickets.

Pakistan’s frontline attack, featuring Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mir Hamza, and Mohammad Ali, managed only 10 wickets in comparison, highlighting Bangladesh’s impact with the ball in that series.

Since that breakthrough, Bangladesh’s pacers have maintained their consistency across conditions, both at home and abroad, adding depth and discipline to what was once considered a weaker department. Shanto believes this improvement has significantly changed the team’s balance.

“Our pacers have improved immensely in terms of skill, which gives me an extra cushion as a captain,” he said. “I personally want the batters to take up the challenge of putting up a big first-innings total. A proper combination of pace and spin will be key to our success.”

A major focal point remains young speedster Nahid Rana, regarded as the fastest bowler across both squads and capable of touching speeds close to 150 km/h. His raw pace is expected to be a key weapon in the series.

“I have known Rana since his early days and I am aware of his work ethic,” Shanto added. “For a captain, having a genuine tearaway in the side is always a massive plus. He is in great rhythm and I expect him to hit his peak in this series.”
