Day 3 in Darwin: Key stats and records

Bangladesh’s commanding performance in Darwin has produced a host of notable milestones as the Tigers put themselves in a strong position against Australia after Day 3. 

Their 426 was their second-highest Test total against Australia, while the 228-run first-innings lead was the fifth-biggest in Bangladesh’s Test history. The innings also kept Australia in the field for 138 overs, their longest against the hosts in more than seven years.

Here are the key highlights from a fascinating day of cricket:

** Bangladesh’s 426 was their second-highest Test total against Australia, behind their 427 at Fatullah in 2006.

** Bangladesh’s 228-run first-innings lead was their fifth-highest in Tests. On each of the previous four occasions, they went on to win.

** Australia have conceded a 200-plus first-innings lead 82 times and won only three of those Tests: against South Africa in Durban in 1950, Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1992 and Pakistan in Sydney in 2010.

** Bangladesh’s 426 kept Australia in the field for 138 overs, the longest innings by a visiting side in Australia since India batted for 167.2 overs at the SCG in January 2019. It was also their longest innings against Australia in Tests, surpassing the 123.3 overs they batted at Fatullah in 2006.

** Australia last conceded a 200-plus first-innings lead at home in January 2019, when India took a 322-run lead in Sydney.

** Hasan Mahmud faced 92 balls, the second-most by a Bangladesh No. 8 or lower against Australia. Nasir Hossain holds the record with 97 balls at Chattogram in 2017.

** Only the second time three Bangladesh batters have scored 50-plus in a Test innings against Australia, after the 2006 Fatullah Test.

** Australia have conceded 400-plus in a home Test only twice since January 2019. The other occasion was India's 487 for six declared in Perth in 2024.

** Australia's top three were all bowled for only the second time since 2008 (against India in Adelaide).
