Tigers seize Day 1 honours in Darwin: Here are the highlights

Hasan Mahmud’s career-best 6-55 bowled Australia out for 198 as Bangladesh seized the honours on Day 1 in Darwin. The Tigers closed on 96-1, just 102 behind, with Mominul Haque unbeaten on 35 and Tanzid Hasan on 32. A superb start to a Test many expected Bangladesh to lose inside three days. Here are the highlights:

**Hasan Mahmud’s 6-55 is his best Test figures and the third-best innings haul by a Bangladesh pacer. He also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take a five-for in Australia across formats. All three of his Test five-fors have come away from home -- against Pakistan, India and Australia.

Hasan completed his third Test five-for in his 15th Test, becoming the second Bangladesh pacer to take three, after Shahadat Hossain (four). Robiul Islam and Nahid Rana are the other Bangladesh pacers with multiple five-fors.

Hasan credits partnership bowling for historic six-for

**Hasan became only the third Bangladesh bowler after Mohammad Rafique (2006) and Shakib Al Hasan (2017) to take a Test five-for against Australia. Shakib took five wickets in each innings of the 2017 Mirpur Test. 

**Australia’s 198 is their lowest Test total against Bangladesh, surpassing their previous low of 217 in the 2017 Mirpur Test, which Bangladesh won by 20 runs. 

**Australia’s 198 is their fourth-lowest Test total against a subcontinental team in Australia. The three lower totals came against India (83 in Melbourne, 1981; 104 in Perth, 2024) and Pakistan (184 in Sydney, 1973).
Mominul Haque (5,166) surpassed Tamim Iqbal (5,134) to become Bangladesh’s second-highest Test run-scorer, behind Mushfiqur Rahim (6,808). 

**This was only the second time Bangladesh’s pacers took all 10 wickets in a Test innings, after the feat against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024. 

**Mitchell Starc (434) became the most successful left-arm bowler in Test history after dismissing Shadman Islam, surpassing Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath (433).

Tigers take control of Darwin Test after first day

**Steve Smith’s 82nd Test fifty-plus score saw him join Steve Waugh at the top of Australia’s list. Ricky Ponting leads with 103, followed by Allan Border (90). 

**Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon are playing together for the first time since July 2025 against the West Indies at St George’s. It is also their first home Test together since the Brisbane Test against India in December 2024.
