Premier League title race: All you need to know
The Premier League title race remains extremely tight, with Arsenal now holding a narrow advantage at the top. They are three points clear of Manchester City with four league matches remaining, although they have played one more game.
Going into the weekend, the two sides were level on both points and goal difference -- only the second time in Premier League history (after 1998–99) that the top two had been tied on both metrics this late in the season while having played the same number of matches.
Arsenal have now moved ahead after a hard-fought 1–0 home victory over Newcastle United on Saturday.
Manchester City, meanwhile, did not play a league fixture due to their FA Cup commitments. They secured a 2–1 win over Southampton to reach the final.
Arsenal could extend their lead to six points when they host Fulham on May 2. Manchester City then travel to Everton two days later, though they still hold a game in hand -- a postponed home match against Crystal Palace yet to be rescheduled.
If both teams win all of their remaining Premier League matches, they would finish level on points.
In that case, the Premier League Handbook (Rule C.17) sets out the tie-breakers in order: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head points, head-to-head away goals scored, and a playoff match if still required.
The margins remain razor-thin. Arsenal have scored 64 goals and conceded 26, giving them a +38 goal difference, while Manchester City have scored 66 and conceded 29 for +37. If goals scored becomes decisive, City currently hold a slight edge (66 vs 64).
However, if both sides also finish level on points, goal difference, and goals scored, Manchester City would win the title due to superior head-to-head results this season, taking four points from Arsenal’s one.
The final two tie-breakers -- away goals in head-to-head matches and a playoff -- are therefore highly unlikely to come into play.
Both clubs also face demanding schedules outside the league. Arsenal are in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, facing Atlético Madrid on April 29 and May 5, while Manchester City have reached the FA Cup final, where they will meet either Chelsea or Leeds United at Wembley on May 16.
With domestic and European commitments piling up, the title race is set for a dramatic finish.
