Bangladesh sprinters disappoint in Glasgow

Bangladesh's fastest man Imranur Rahman and fastest woman Shirin Akter endured disappointing outings at the Commonwealth Games, finishing well below their personal bests in the men's and women's 100m events at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, yesterday.

London-based Imranur finished third among six runners in Heat 9, clocking 10.39 seconds. Omari Lewis of Trinidad and Tobago won the heat in 10.37 seconds.

Imranur, whose personal best of 10.11 seconds was set in London in 2023, also failed to match the 10.15 seconds he clocked at the Stratford Grand Prix at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in mid-July. However, he did improve on the 10.58 seconds that earned him the national title at Bangladesh's National Athletics Championships last month.

Shirin endured a similarly disappointing race, finishing last among seven athletes in Heat 7 with a time of 12.40 seconds. Her performance was 0.20 seconds slower than the time she recorded while winning the national title in July.

The sprinter's personal best remains 11.99 seconds, set at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, India.

Meanwhile, boxer Rakib Hossain advanced to the quarter-finals of the 55kg category on Sunday, while US-based Zinnat Ferdous suffered a 5-0 defeat to Northern Ireland's Caitlin Fryers in her opening bout of the Games.
