Hill or sea? Home, I said
I remember a specific Saturday morning not too long ago. I woke up feeling completely drained, the kind of tired that a normal night's sleep just couldn't fix. My first instinct was to grab my phone and look for a getaway, somewhere far, somewhere different. But then I looked at the sheer effort involved: the packing, the long drive, the stress of navigating a new place, and the inevitable exhaustion of coming back. The idea of going somewhere far left long before I could get excited about it. I realised I didn't actually want to go anywhere; I just wanted to be on vacation. In a world where we are constantly told to “get away from it all,” a new trend is taking over the travel scene that suggests the exact opposite. It’s called the staycation, and it is redefining what it means to take a break. Far from being a consolation prize for those who can’t travel abroad, the staycation has become a deliberate choice for the savvy traveller looking to recharge without the jet lag, the long airport queues, or the soul-crushing luggage fees.

Even though the idea of a staycation has been seen recently all across social media, Tagore, in his charismatic way, told us many years back to open our eyes to the wonders that are just two steps from our door. When he said,
“Bohu din dhore, bohu krosh dure
Bohu byay kori, bohu desh ghure
Dekhite giyechi porbotmala, dekhite giyechi shindhu.
Dekha hoy nai chokkhu meliya
Ghor hote shudhu dui paa feliya
Ekti dhaner shis her upor, ekti shishir bindu."
I wonder if he was referring to a staycation. Being a sincere admirer of Tagore, let’s follow his direction and explore the ways to make a staycation actually work and not make it only about staying at home.

Switching Off to Plug In
The biggest hurdle of a staycation isn't the logistics, it’s the mindset. When we travel locally or abroad, we naturally switch into vacation mode. We ignore the laundry, we don’t check work emails, and we treat ourselves to fancy dinners. To pull off a successful staycation, you must apply those same rules to your local life. Forget all the mail and take a chill pill.
Even if you are physically in your own house or a hotel downtown, you must mentally depart. Meaning setting boundaries with your routine. If you’re staying at home, hide the chores and the laptop. If you’re at a local hotel, leave the "to-do" list behind. A staycation only works if you treat your own city with the same curiosity and respect you would give to Paris or Tokyo.
Brace yourself for some “Home-Grown Adventure”
Arranging a staycation requires a different kind of planning than an international tour. Instead of looking for flight deals, you are looking for experiences.

1. Choose Your "Base Camp"
Decide if you want to stay in your own home, check into a local boutique hotel or a cosy Airbnb. If you stay at home, the "vacation" feeling comes from changing your environment. Buy the high-quality
coffee you usually skip, stock up on luxury bath products, or hire a cleaning service to ensure you aren't tempted to scrub the floors. If you opt for a hotel, choose one in a neighbourhood you rarely visit. This immediately makes the streets feel new and the sights unfamiliar.
2. Tourist for a Day
Every town has that one museum, park, or quirky landmark that locals never visit. Now is the time to go. Research your city as if you’ve never been there. Look for walking tours, hidden rooftop bars,
or independent bookstores. The goal is to do things you "never have time for" during a normal work week.
3. Plan Your Meals Like a Critic
One of the best parts of travel is the food. For your staycation, skip the usual takeout spots. Instead, make reservations at that buzzy new restaurant you’ve seen on Instagram or find a bakery in a
different part of town for a morning pastry crawl. By focusing on local gastronomy, you transform a regular weekend into a culinary event.

The Joy of the Easy Return
Perhaps the greatest beauty of the staycation is the "Saturday Evening Satisfaction." Unlike the exhaustion that follows a 12-hour flight home, a staycation ends with a short drive or a quick walk back to your own bed. You return to your life feeling refreshed, not depleted.
By embracing the staycation, you learn a valuable travel lesson: adventure isn't about the distance you travel, but the curiosity you bring to the journey. the next time you feel the itch to pack a bag, look closer to home. Your next grand adventure might be waiting just around the corner.
Last but not least, work is not giving me vacation, so I will just go on a staycation. Are you coming?
Your staycation checklist
- Look for amenities that feel like a luxury.
- Does the hotel have a heated pool?
- Does the local spa offer a day pass?
- Since you aren't spending money on airfare, you can afford to splurge a little more on the "extras" that make a stay feel special.
- A great staycation often involves leaving the car behind. Look for areas where you can wander on foot.
- Even in a city you’ve lived in for years, there is always something new. Look for temporary art exhibits, seasonal festivals, or even a local workshop like pottery or sourdough baking.
