The risk of dengue could rise sharply after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, as rainfall during the period may have created numerous mosquito breeding grounds, experts warned.

Excessive rainfall across Bangladesh is increasing the risk of an early dengue outbreak this year, prompting entomologists to call for immediate government action to eliminate mosquito breeding sources and strengthen public awareness campaigns.

With ongoing rainfall across the country, the risk of dengue transmission is expected to rise in the coming months if authorities fail to take necessary preventive measures, experts have warned.

Preventive measures must begin in January

As of yesterday, 188 people had died and 44,693, had been hospitalised.

Eighty-one percent of dengue patients who died this year were admitted to hospitals only after running a fever for three or more days, health authorities have reported, highlighting delayed hospitalisation as the leading cause of fatalities so far.

The country yesterday recorded the highest single-day dengue toll, with 12 deaths and 740 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, raising grave concerns over the escalating outbreak.

With the number of dengue cases and deaths on the rise, the health authorities have issued fresh directives to all hospitals, including setting up fever/flu corners in outdoor departments and keeping dedicated beds for dengue patients.

So far, the country has already recorded 44 deaths and 3,651 hospitalisations from dengue this year. With ongoing intermittent rains, experts fear the situation could worsen if immediate actions are not taken.
