The dust has settled. Spain lifted their second World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over an Argentina side that never truly showed up in the all-important final at New York-New Jersey Stadium today.

The technology introduced to eliminate controversy has become the tournament's defining subplot, and Argentina, fairly or otherwise, have found themselves at its centre.

Atlanta may ultimately be remembered as the night when the law prevailed. Whether it has  prevailed equally for everyone is the question this World Cup cannot yet answer.

But long after the final whistle, the biggest talking point remained a VAR decision that denied Egypt from extending their lead further, which perhaps could have reshaped the game’s outcome.

Referees will explain VAR decisions to stadium crowds and television audiences in a 12-month trial starting at next month's FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, soccer's law-making body said on Wednesday.
