Apple confirmed to introduce USB-C by 2024
Apple has confirmed that they will introduce USB-C-supported iPhones by 2024, as per a comment made by Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing at Apple Inc. The new direction comes as a response to the European Union mandating USB-C support for future smartphones sold in the EU nations.
According to new legislation by European Union, by 2024, all smartphones sold in the EU must contain a universal USB-C port for wired charging. This ruling extends to other electronic devices such as tablets, headphones, handheld gaming consoles, e-readers and digital cameras - and of course, the iPhones as well.
The ruling was made to make common charging more accessible in Europe. As per a press statement made by Alex Agius Saliba, Member of the European Parliament, for a long time, European consumers have faced frustrations regarding multiple chargers being introduced with new devices. According to him, with this legislation now passed, a single charger can be used to charge all portable electronics in the EU nations.
When asked for further comments by The Wall Street Journal, Joswiak refused to confirm if USB-C-supported iPhones would be sold outside the EU as well. Currently, iPhones use Apple's signature Lightning connector for charging and accessory connection purposes.
