The Rajshahi Protection Movement Council (RPMC) held a bid public meeting and brought out a procession in the city on Monday to press its seven-point demand.

The demands include gas supply to Rajshahi, introduction of three inter-city trains on Rajshahi-Joydevpur route, proper medicare facilities at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), implementation of North Rajshahi Irrigation Project and a halt to "rampant" lease of Rajshahi City Corporation properties to ruling party men.

With RPMC convenor Zamat Khan in the chair, the meeting held at Shaheb Bazar was addressed by, among others, engineer Tajul Islam, lawyer Hamidul Haque, Rajshahi University teachers Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu and Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, and journalists Hasan Millat and Saidur Rahman.

The speakers urged people to rally round RPMC to realise the demands. They said a greater movement will be launched if three trains are not introduced from day one and gas is not supplied to Rajshahi region for its development.

They also called for improving facilities at RMCH.

They said the proposed North Rajshahi Irrigation Project, in which surface water and flood water will be used for irrigation, will help check desertification of the north region, the Barind area in particular.
