Implement Ctg Master Plan

Speakers at a seminar here urged the authorities to implement the 1994 'drainage master plan' to get rid of the water-logging problem in the port city.

Implementation of the plan is the only way to solve the problem, they said at the seminar.

Experts, high officials and noted personalities took part in the seminar, jointly organised by the Chittagong centre of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) and the Planned Chittagong Forum (PCF) and held at the IEB on Tuesday.

Presided over by PCF President Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam, the seminar was addressed by, among others, IEB Vice-president Delwar Hossain, ex-chairman of Chittagong Development Authority Mahmudul Islam, former chief engineer of Chittagong port Sultan Mahmud, former Vice-chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Dr Alamgir Mohammad Sirajuddin, Prof Sekander Khan of CU and advocate Emdadul Islam.

Engineer M Ali Ashraf in his key-note paper suggested excavation of more canals as per the master plan to create a natural drainage system.

Ashraf in his speech said " the master plan was kept in the fridge for the past eight years. The Chaktai canal is not adequate to remove the water-logging canal.

It is not possible to turn Chittagong into a commercial capital without implementing the master plan, he said.

He stressed for regular cleaning and maintainance of draingae system in the city to keep it free from watere logging.

Ashraf said faulty drainage system, lack of maintenance, constructions on on drains and indiscriminate hill cutting were the reasons behind waterlogging.
