Lawyers boycott court in Manikganj, Magura, Nilphamari
The demands include withdrawal of the provision of filing income tax return and collection of trade licence, transparency in appointment of judges and independence of the judiciary.
A Daily Star correspondent reported from Manikganj that during the court boycott, the district bar association held a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office at 10 am with its president Meher Uddin presiding.
Speakers at the rally also resented imposition of tax on the legal profession and alleged government intervention on the judiciary.
Golam Mohiuddin, Abul Kashem, Khalilur Rahman, Dipak Ghosh, Abdus Salam and Abdul Majid addressed the rally.
In Magura, lawyers under the banner of Six-point Implementation Committee brought out a procession in the town and held a rally on the collectorate premises to realise their demands, our correspondent reported.
With advocate Shariful Islam in the chair, the rally was addressed by, among others, advocate Shafiqul Islam and advocate Hasan Seraji Suja.
Our correspondent reported from Nilphamari that hundreds of litigants were seen lazing in court buildings in absence of lawyers.
Only public prosecutors were seen in the court area.
