'It's gram chharkhar, not Gram Sarkar

Bid to make elected bodies inactive, shelter criminals: Ershad
Our Correspondent, Nilphamari
Former president and Jatiyo Party Chairman HM Ershad has said Gram Sarker being formed by the government will make elected Unions Parishads inactive and useless.

"It is Gram Chharkhar (destruction of village), not Gram Sarker", he told a public meeting at Nilphamari town Tuesday evening.

He also addressed 20 rallies at different places of the district on the day.

By forming Gram Sarker, the ruling party is sheltering terrorists to capture vote centres with a view to winning the next parliamentary election, he said.

Ershad was accompanied by JP central leaders GM Kader MP, Moshiur Rahman and Mozammel Hossen Lala, and its local leaders K Alam Chowdhury, Joynal Abedin and Shahjahan Chowdhury.

Ershad said people want Jatiya Party in power to free themselves from "misrule of the three elected governments after 1990".

If Jatiya Party goes to power, it will remove terrorism within three months. Unemployment problem will be solved by re-opening all closed mills and factories, the former president said.

Once in power, he will divide the country into eight provinces and decentralise power by reviving the upazila system.

He expressed his anguish that country's jute mills have been closed down while such mills are flourishing across the border in India. Farmers' demand for fixing jute price at Tk 500 per mound is yet to be met, he said.

Ershad alleged that no development work was done in greater Rangpur region after 1990.

"I will make up the loss if my party goes to power", he said.
