Agro-based EPZ is only way to develop Rajshahi, minister says

Terming agriculture the only way to develop the Rajshahi region, Post and Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Aminul Hoque underscored the need for establishing an agro-based export processing zone (EPZ) in the area.

Banks can to play a vital role in establishing an agro-based EPZ in the region, he said.

The minister was inaugurating the newly-shifted Corporate Branch of the Janata Bank at Shaheb Bazar Monichattar in the town recently.

He also expressed his satisfaction over performance of the branch, where only four percent of the loans are defaulted against about 40 per cent in other branches.

JB General Manager (Regional Office) Abdul Hamid presided over the function while Deputy Managing Director (DMD) Dewan Mujibur Rahman was present as special guest.

Abdul Hamid said JB, for the first time, earned a profit of Tk 1.38 crore during fiscal 2002-3.

He told the function that JB disbursed a loan for establishing a mango juice company at Chapainawabganj.

Mujibur Rahman said the bank would soon introduce online service which would control 60 branches under a networking programme.
