Clashes injure 16 in Jessore, Lalmonirhat

At least 16 people were injured in Jessore and Lalmonirhat in clashes between people during formation of Gram Sarkar units on Saturday.

Our Staff Correspondent reported from Khulna that 10 people including a Union Parishad (UP) member were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Jhumjhumpur under Jessore Sadar upazila.

According to police, the clash took place between supporters of Jhumjhumpur UP Chairman Manjurul Huq and local BNP leader Mokaddes Hossain when names of persons in the Gram Sarkar unit was being read out by a representative of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

The injured are UP member Khalilur Rahman, former UP member Faruque Hossain, Abu Saeed, Jamaluddin, Dulal Hossain, Ibrahim, Iqbal Hossain, Ruhul Amin, Khalil and Moin.

A case has been lodged with Jessore Kotwali police in this connection.

Gram Sarkar could not be formed at Chalna Bazar in Dakop upazila on Saturday as rival groups clashed.

Our Lalmonirhat correspondent reported that at least six persons were injured in clash during formation of Gram Sarkar at ward No 3 in Gokunda union in the Sadar upazila.

The clash took place after voting as the defeated group attacked the winner group, both aligned to ruling BNP.

The injured are Abdul Aziz, Keramot Ali, Kachhir Uddin, Mecher Ali, Bashir Uddin, and Bakul.

They were admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

The injured said they will file a case if district BNP leaders do not take any action.
