Token hunger strike in Khulna for reopening of mills

The Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Commkittee (KDACC) and Patkal Sramik Karmacri Sangram Parishad jointly observed a 'mass hunger strike' at the Shahid Hadis Park on Monday for reopening of three jute mills, Khulna Newsprint Mill and Hard Board Mill, and to press other demands.

The other demands include supply of gas through pipeline, quick completion of onconstruction airport, construction of the proposed Padma bridge at Mawa and saving Mongla port from being ruined.

The hunger strike from 9 am to 5 pm ended with a call by the participants to support the 48-hour hartal called on August 27 and 28 to realise the demands. Former state minister Talukdar Abdul Khaleque MP, City Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Mia Golam Parwar MP, former whip Mostafa Rashidi Shuja, district Awami League President Harun-or-Rashid, City BNP Vice-president Abdul Gaffar Biswas, Khulna CPB President Feroze Ahmed and CBA leaders of all the jute mills were among other who addressed a protest rally.

They warned the government of severe consequence for "closing and laying off mills one after another on the pretext of privatisation, throwing thousands of workers and employees out of job.
