Jatiya Sramik Dal, workers front of ruling BNP, will enforce a dawn to dusk hartal in Bandarban today protesting arrest of a woman leader of the party.

Police arrested Sanowara Begum on Thursday and sent her to jail.

Police said she is wanted in a case filed with the Speedy Trial Tribunal.

District Sramik Dal President Abdul Kuddus announced the hartal programme at its rally in the town on Thursday, organised to celebrate completion of the Four-Party Alliance government's two years in power.

In a press release issued later, Saramik Dal leaders said a higher court stayed proceedings of the case but police arrested her only to harass her.

They also demanded removal of officer-in-charge of Bandarban thana Kafil Uddin for arresting Sanowara 'illegally'.

When contacted, police admitting that a higher court stayed one case against Sanowara. She was arrested on a warrant issued by the Speedy Trial Tribunal in another case, they said.
