Gaibandha UP Forum formed

Held at the Gano Unnayan Kendro auditorium, it was presided over by Mahbuber Rahman Tulu, chairman Shahpara UP.

It was attended by a large number of UP members and chairmen from different areas of the district.

The meeting was addressed by, among others, Ataur Rahman, Fazlul Kaiyume Huda, Abdul Manan Mandol, Aminul Islam, Abdul Majid, Mozammel Huq Mandol, Fahima Mandol, Rashida Begum and Rokeya Piyas.

The meeting formed a Gaibandha Union Parishad Forum with Mahbuber Rahman Tulu as its president.

USAID is providing funds for the UP networking.

The speakers critised the recent government circular that local government representatives are to seek prior permission from the Deputy Commissioner or the UNO for attending any meeting.

This will curb rights and privileges of elected representatives, they said.

The meeting was also told about functioning of local government forums in Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The speakers also pointed out the existence of International Forum of Local Government like the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) and the Commonwealth Local Government forum (CLGF).
