Trial of Dr Aftab murder begins tomorrow

The trial of Dr Aftab Hossain Murder case will begin in the Speedy Trial Tribunal, Sylhet tomorrow with deposition of witnesses.

Charge-framing in the case was completed last week.

Among the six chargesheeted accused, three are on bail, one is absconding and two are in jail hajat, court sources said.

Some miscreants riding a motorcycle called Dr Aftab Hossain, Assistant Director of the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, out of his chamber at Dhakadakshin bazaar in Golapganj upazila on the night of September 14 last year on the plea of attending an elderly patient.

They took him to a hillock in Ghoshgaon village, killed him and took away his motorbike, mobile phone and money. The body was recovered next morning.

A case was filed. The officer-in-charge of Golpaganj thana was investigation officer.

Sources claimed that Dr Aftab was killed as he refused to pay a big amount of toll to a gang at Dhakiadakshin bazaar.

The murder of Dr. Aftab, known for his amiable behaviour, sparked widespread agitation in the entire upazila.

A hartal was observed in the upazila protesting the murder and demanding trial of the killers. Members of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) also observed a day's strike in Sylhet.

The central BMA also gave a memorandum to the government for arrest and punishment of the killers. It was alleged that the OC of Golapganj thana behaved mysteriously and did not arrest the killers while they were in the area immediately after the murder.

The case was later transferred to the Detective Branch.

Later, the Police Superintendent and the OC were transferred from Sylhet.

The DB arrested Luthfar Rahman, Sujan, Abdul Haque, Sufian, Sebul, Liton, Panki, and Bakul.

Among them, Sujan gave a confessional statements to police and magistrate.

On July 4, the DB chargesheeted six persons.

They are Noman Uddin, Murad, Sujan Ali, Luthfur Rahman, Sufian and Jashimuddin.
