Tension prevails as Friday's foiled meet left 35 party men hurt in clashes

Tension is prevailing in Purbadhala centring the upazila Awami League conference, rescheduled for tomorrow after Friday's meet ended in a pandemonium leaving 35 party leaders and activists injured in clashes.

Former AL lawmaker Sirajul Islam was among the injured when rival groups clashed at Purbadhala Government Primary School over posts in the upazila AL body.

Party sources said Purbadhola AL is divided into two groups for long. One group is led by Warasat Hossein Belal Birpratik and upazila AL General Secretary Ershad Hossain Malu.

The other group is led by former lawmakers Mosharof Hossain, Principal Sirajul Islam, retired DIG of police Abdul Hannan Khan and upazila AL president Abu Siddik Ahmed.

The sources said both Warasat Hossein wants to be president of the upazila AL while Abu Siddik Ahmed wants to retain his position.

Central AL leaders Sayed Ashraful Islam MP, Ashim Kumer Ukil, Shafi Ahmed, Manjur Kader Korashi and Netrakona district AL President Fazlur Rahman Khan who came to attend Friday's conference left the venue under police guard amid clashes.

The central party leaders later re-fixed the conference date on December 9 (Tuesday), to be held at Netrakona Mohua Auditorium.
