'NGOs have vital role in combating AIDS'

The meeting, jointly organised by local NGO Shapla Mahilla Sangstha, CARE and Action AID in observance of World AIDS Day was addressed by, among others,by Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Jalal ahmed, Civil Surgeon Dr SM Abul Khair Mia, Government Yasin College Principal Md Altaf Hossain, NGO activists Nasrin Sultana and Chanchala Mondol. Karunamay Adhikari, presided over the discussion, held at the local Shilpakala Academy Auditorium.

The speakers said that sex workers are carriers of AIDs in our country , bu they are part of the society.

Sex workers need regular health check up like in developed countries to check spread of AIDS.

Government efforts in this regard is too inadequate. NGOs should come forward in a bigger way, they said.

The discussants also stressed the need for religious teachings to check AIDS.

The meeting was followed by two short dramas titled 'Adhikar' and "Ghatak', staged with participation of sex-workers.
