Defying objection by Rajshahi Water Development Board (WDB), a leader of ruling BNP cut about seven feet of the Rajshahi Town Protection Embankment at Eidgah point for making a passage for trucks to collect sand from the Padma river for business.

WDB officials said this will pose a threat to the embankment and cause flood during the wet season. But no action was taken since the dam was cut at on December 9.

According to WDB Executive Engineer Saidul Islam, two WDB officials rushed to the spot to stop cutting of the embankment but returned after hearing that district BNP Vice- president SM Altaf Hossain ordered it following a consent from Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu MP.

"The matter was brought to the notice of the Chief Engineer and the Superintendent Engineer", he said.

SM Altaf Hossain later admitted that he cut the dam on permission from the WDB for collecting sand and said many businessmen do so during the dry season.

However, Mayor Minu denied the allegation.

WDB Chief Engineer Wazed Ali said, they requested the BNP leader to mend the dam.
