Beaten for protesting vulgarity

A village elder and his son are at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for about over two months for treatment of bone fractures they suffered for not allowing a vulgar jatra show.

Their family is fleeing home at Dathmondol village in Nasirnagor upazila, fearing further attack after the organisers of the jatra (a type of drama) also burnt their house.

Some local youths had planned a jatra near a mosque in the village.

Alhaj Md. Shamsul Haque, chairman of the mosque committee, first requested them not to arrange a jatra near the mosque because there would be vulgarity in the show.

Unheeded, Haque filed a written objection to the Nasirnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) on October 19, naming Md. Rofiz Mia as the organiser.

UNO sent a notice to stop the planned jatra, Haque told this correspondent.

Haque also sought security of his family. Nasirnagar police recorded a General Diary but did not take any action.

On November 11, some people led by Rafiz attacked Haque's house, looted and torched it. They beat Haque and his son Tofael 17 and fractured their both hands.

On information, Nasirnagar police rushed there and arrested four men of Rafiz.

Four separate cases were filed with police.

Police also set up a temporary police camp there for 14 days. The miscreants went into hiding.

But after withdrawal of the camp, the miscreants are now seen moving in the village. They are threatening the victim's family to withdraw the cases, Haque said.

When contacted, police said they are trying to arrest the accused.
