Half of tubewells arsenic affected in Brahmanbaria

About fifty per cent tube wells in Bancharampur, Nabinagar, Sarial, Kashba and Brahmanbaria Sadar upazilas are contaminated with arsenic.

So far, 18 people have been found attacked with arsenicosis.

This was detected during as random survey, initiated by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). Launched recently, the survey is continuing, they said.

During the survey, water of 270 tube wells out of 620 tested in each of the five upazilas were found contaminated with arsenic beyond permissible limit, PHED officials said.

During the survey, PHED men marker the contaminated tube wells with red colour and advised the people not to use their water. But people said have no alternative sources as surface water is not available at all places during the ongoing dry season, they said.

Doctors said arsenic contaminated water causes skin and liver disease and blurred vision.
