Former British PM Callaghan passes away

Former British prime minister and Labour Party leader James Callaghan died Saturday on the eve of his 93rd birthday, a family spokesman said.

Lord Callaghan was in power from April 1976 until May 1979, when his government was swept away by Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives in the aftermath of a period of industrial unrest known as "the winter of discontent".

The family spokesman said Callaghan died at home in East Sussex, in southeast England.
