The government has proposed fare exemptions and discounts on trains and metro rail services for senior citizens in the next fiscal year.

Under the proposal, citizens aged 65 and above will be allowed to travel free of charge on government-owned trains. They will also receive a 25 percent discount on metro rail fares.

The proposal was announced as part of the government's welfare measures for senior citizens.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the proposal while presenting the national budget for FY 2026-27 in parliament today.

“The role of senior citizens in nation-building is invaluable, and our government remains steadfast in its commitment to their welfare,” the finance minister said.

He added that the move is expected to reduce transportation costs for senior citizens and improve their access to public transport services.
