7,896 customers withdraw Tk 327 crore on second day
Some 7,896 customers of the five merged banks withdrew Tk 327 crore on the second day of fund disbursement, officials of Sammilito Islami Bank said.
The bank, formed last year through the merger of five troubled Islamic banks—First Security Islami, Global Islami, Union, Exim and Social Islami—started repaying depositors on September 7.
Depositors of the five had been struggling to withdraw their money for more than two years and staged protests demanding the return of their deposits.
In addition, around 12,000 new customers applied to withdraw Tk 331 crore today, the officials said.
Abedur Rahman Sikder, managing director and chief executive officer of Sammilito Islami Bank, told The Daily Star that around 19,000 customers had applied to withdraw more than Tk 1,000 crore, but they had withdrawn only a small portion of the amount because they have confidence in the bank.
On August 25, Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman announced that individual depositors would be allowed to withdraw the principal amount of their deposits according to their needs from September 1.
Following the announcement, Sammilito Islami began accepting applications from customers and continued the process.
Bangladesh Bank provided Tk 5,000 crore on Sunday to facilitate payments to customers of the five banks.
Sikder said the bank had contacted all customers who had applied to withdraw money and asked them to come to their respective branches.
“Not everyone came to withdraw their money,” he said.
