Eid sales have gained momentum at different shopping centres and malls in Barishal, as people have started to flock to different markets in the city in large numbers in the last 10 days.

However, the shopkeepers blamed that the extreme summer heat has hampered their sales during day time and forced the shoppers to visit the markets after sunset till late night.

All kinds of shops—air-conditioned or the road side ones—are now finding buyers, as the local businesses are bringing in new dresses of different price tags considering people of all income groups.

Many shoppers went to the markets after getting salaries and Eid allowances, which will continue until the early morning of the day of Eid-ul-Fitr scheduled to be held on April 21 or 22, said Saidur Rahman Rintu, former president of Barishal Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Dresses named after different characters of Indian TV serials used to rule the market earlier, which has changed a bit, as the young buyers are preferring long and loose-fitting readymade dresses this year, he said.

This correspondent visited different shopping malls and markets on Fazlul Huq Avenue, Sadar Road, Bogura Road, Bazaar Road, Hemayetuddin Road, Fakirbari Road, Chawk Bazar and Sagordi areas of the city and found that the female buyers are mainly purchasing dresses and other items for Eid.

"This year's prices are 20-25 per cent higher than the previous year," said Rashida Begum, who came to the market with her two kids.

Salwar kameez with copper works brought in from India is one of the top selling items of this year, a young shopper said.

The prices of the dresses are hovering between Tk 6,000 and Tk 120,000, she said.

Cotton saris of different designs are found in a price range between Tk 1,500 and Tk 8,000 while the price of embroidered saris can go as high as Tk 50,000, said Begum Nahar, another buyer.
