DIU observes International Mother Language Day

Daffodil International University (DIU) observed Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with wreath-laying ceremonies and commemorative events at Daffodil Smart City.

At the first hour of February 21, a delegation led by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammed Masum Iqbal placed a floral wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar, says a press release.

Teachers, officials and students were present and observed a moment of silence in memory of the language martyrs.

Later in the morning, another wreath was placed at the Central Shaheed Minar on the DIU campus under the leadership of Proctor Professor Dr Sheikh Md Al-Ayeary, with participation from teachers, students and officials. A one-minute silence was observed before the tribute.

In a statement, the university said the Language Movement remains a significant chapter in national history and called for proper practice and preservation of Bangla.

“The Great Language Movement is a glorious chapter in our national history, setting an unparalleled example of sacrifice, rights, and identity. Everyone must remain conscious and responsible in ensuring the proper practice, correct use, and preservation of our mother language. It is our collective duty to pass on the spirit of Ekushey to future generations,” the statement said.

The university added that International Mother Language Day is a source of national pride and the spirit of Ekushey should be reflected in daily life, culture and values.
