EWU holds 25th convocation, awards degrees to 1,857 graduates

East West University (EWU) held its 25th convocation on Monday, 02 February 2026, at Aftabnagar Playground in Dhaka, with 1,857 undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees.

As representative of the President of Bangladesh and Chancellor of the university, Mobasser Monem, chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, conferred degrees on the graduates. Nine students who achieved a CGPA of 4.0 out of 4.0 were awarded gold medals for outstanding academic performance, says a press release.

Addressing the convocation, Mobasser Monem said knowledge and skills become meaningful only when grounded in moral principles. He urged graduates to love and take pride in their country, noting that national development is linked to spiritual fulfilment. Referring to current global challenges, he called on young people to help build a peaceful and liveable world by reducing national and international unrest and stressed the moral responsibility to protect the environment, on which human existence depends.

The convocation speaker, Tapan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, said the nation needs ethical professionals and innovative problem solvers, not just a workforce. He said success should not be measured by salary, designation or social media presence, but by impact on society, the nation and the world. He added that success often comes after repeated efforts.

Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of EWU and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, said the university has consistently prioritised merit and transparency. He expressed optimism that EWU graduates would contribute to building a society free from discrimination, guided by the skills, ethics and education they acquired at the university.

Shams Rahman, vice-chancellor of EWU, urged graduates not to remain confined to the comfort zone of simply earning a degree, warning that such satisfaction can lead to inertia. He said competing globally and stepping beyond comfort zones are essential for a prosperous future and called on students to become responsible citizens guided by morality and humanity.

The convocation was attended by members of the Board of Trustees, the pro-vice-chancellor, the treasurer, deans, chairpersons of departments, faculty members, officers, graduates and their guardians. Graduates expressed satisfaction at receiving their certificates on time at the conclusion of their academic journey.
