Karim Mia, a 40-year-old rickshaw puller in Dhaka, is from Rangpur. Like many migrant workers in the city, he waits all year for Eid so he can visit his family. This Eid-ul-Fitr, he also hoped to go home. However, during Ramadan his family expenses increased and travel fares became higher. As a result, he sent almost all of his income to his family. Despite his strong wish, Karim Mia finally decided he would not go home this Eid.
There are many people like Karim Mia who cannot return home during Eid because of financial hardship. Some people manage to travel at the last moment, but often in unsafe ways. Many ride on the roofs of trains, sit on the back of trucks, or stand in overcrowded buses for long journeys.
To support these people, Garibook has once again launched its ‘Khushir Ticket’ campaign this Eid. Through this initiative, underprivileged people will be able to travel home safely and completely free of cost.
Last year, Garibook first introduced this initiative and helped 30 underprivileged people travel home in an AC Coaster bus. This year, the campaign has been expanded. Two AC Coaster buses will operate on the Dhaka–Netrokona and Dhaka–Saidpur routes, allowing 60 people, twice the number from last year, to travel home free of charge. During the journey, all passengers were also provided with essential iftar items, including drinking water and light refreshments.
Speaking about the initiative, Syed Rajib Hossain, Founder and CEO of Garibook, said returning home during Eid is a very emotional moment for everyone. However, during this time daily expenses increase and travel fares also rise, making it difficult for many people to go home. He added that many people send most of their earnings to their families and spend Eid alone in Dhaka, while others travel in risky ways just to reach home.
He further said Garibook started the ‘Khushir Ticket’ campaign during last year’s Eid-ul-Adha with the aim of helping such people. This year the initiative has been expanded so that more people can return home safely. According to him, the joy of Eid and returning home to loved ones should be the same for everyone.
Garibook believes travel should be easier and more accessible for everyone. Following this idea, the platform does not charge drivers any commission. Drivers receive the full fare, which helps them earn more while passengers can also enjoy comparatively lower travel costs.
Garibook is an app-based transportation platform. Through the Garibook app, passengers can easily book vehicles for travel within the city or to other districts. Users can choose from vehicles such as Sedan, Noah, HiAce, or Coaster buses, and select their preferred driver and fare.
In addition to intercity and ride-sharing services, Garibook also offers airport pick-up and drop-off services, hourly car booking, and luxury car rental, including brands such as BMW, Mercedes, Harrier, and Audi.
