NSU observes International Mother Language Day

North South University observed National Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day 2026 with wreath-laying ceremonies and a discussion session.

Wreaths were placed at the Central Shaheed Minar and at the Shaheed Minar on the NSU campus, says a press release.

A discussion session was later held at the university’s AUDI-801 auditorium.

The programme was attended by Chairman of the NSU Board of Trustees Aziz Al Kaiser as chief guest. Founder Life Member and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees Benajir Ahmed attended as special guest. Dr Salimullah Khan, Professor of the Department of History and Philosophy at NSU, delivered the keynote speech. The session was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury. Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Nasar U Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Abdur Rob Khan, deans, faculty members, officials and students were present.

The programme began with recitation from the Holy Quran, the national anthem and a one-minute silence in memory of the language martyrs. In his welcome address, Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Nesar Uddin Ahmed recited a poem on the significance of Bangla.

In his keynote speech, Dr Salimullah Khan discussed the history and legacy of the Bangla language. “Language is not just a tool for acquiring knowledge. It is more than a medium of learning and communication; it is a profound marker of our identity. While we should embrace the study of other languages alongside Bangla, it must never come at the cost of our mother tongue,” he said.

Benajir Ahmed said February 21 marked a new chapter in national life and referred to UNESCO’s recognition of the day as International Mother Language Day.

Aziz Al Kaiser said language required regular practice and research to strengthen its global presence.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said the importance of the mother tongue could not be undermined and stressed the need to enrich education and research in Bangla.

The programme ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Treasurer Professor Abdur Rob Khan.
