Presidency University hosts astronomy outreach and sky observation programme
Presidency University hosted an astronomy outreach and public engagement programme titled “Exploring the Cosmos: Astro Talk & Sky Observation” on January 29, 2026, at its campus to promote scientific curiosity, interdisciplinary learning and hands-on exposure to astronomy among students and young researchers.
The programme began with an Astro Talk session from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Hall Room 401, followed by a sky observation session from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm on the university rooftop. Participants observed celestial objects using professional astronomical instruments, including telescopes, says a press release.
The plenary session featured Farseem Mannan Mohammedy, professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, as the keynote speaker. Distinguished guests included Md Kutub Uddin, professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Dhaka.
Anwarul Kabir, principal adviser to the Board of Trustees of Presidency University, attended as chief guest, while Shahidul Islam Khan, director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell, chaired the programme. The event was anchored by Mohammed Asaduzzaman, member secretary of the organising committee, additional director of IQAC and a senior faculty member of the Department of Business Administration.
In his inaugural speech, Asaduzzaman emphasised the importance of adding basic sciences and liberal arts as areas of study and research alongside a focus on technology-driven fields. He also highlighted the university’s continued collaboration with the NOC-BD team to promote public interest in astronomy through initiatives such as “Astro School”.
Speaking at the event, Anwarul Kabir said, “Universities must play a vital role in nurturing curiosity and scientific thinking beyond textbooks. This program reflects our commitment to creating an environment where students can engage with science experientially and develop a deeper appreciation of the universe.”
Shahidul Islam Khan said, “Astronomy connects multiple disciplines—from physics and mathematics to engineering and philosophy. Through this event, we aimed to inspire students to think critically, adopt research-oriented mindsets, and engage with global scientific communities.”
In his keynote lecture, Farseem Mannan Mohammedy said astronomy is one of the oldest sciences, rooted in early human observation of the sky, and that the interplay between theory and observation continues to drive scientific progress.
The valedictory session was attended by deans, the registrar, heads of departments, the director of student affairs, faculty members and invited guests.
The programme was organised by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell with support from the Office of Student Affairs, Presidency University, and partner organisations NOC-BD and IAU-OAO. MicB Scientific served as the observational partner for the sky observation session.
