Foley new president of Amtob

Michael Foley, chief executive officer of Grameenphone, has been elected as the president of the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (Amtob) for a year.

He is replacing Erik Aas, CEO of Banglalink. His tenure will begin on April 1.

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, managing director and CEO of Robi, was re-elected as vice-president of the association at its board meeting on Wednesday, according to a statement.

The Amtob is the national trade body representing the country's all mobile phone operators Banglalink, Citycell, Grameenphone, Robi, and Teletalk. It also has three associate members Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia.

In the statement, Foley said, "Bangladesh has made impressive advances in telecommunications and the sector has played a commendable role in the development of the economy. However, with the changes in technologies new opportunities and challenges are arising."

He said the Amtob looks forward to working with the government of Bangladesh, associated regulators and the industries to set a clear strategy to address those opportunities and challenges for further development of the country.

Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said the telecom industry is well-poised in the context of the country's digital aspirations.
