The Dhaka University administration has begun preliminary discussions on holding the next election to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), with the current committee’s one-year tenure set to expire in mid-September.

Formal directive will be issued later, according to sources.

A meeting on the election was held at 3:00pm today at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam. A participant said it was the administration’s first meeting on organising the Ducsu election and served as an initial discussion on how the process could move forward.

A hall provost, seeking anonymity, said they had been verbally asked to consult active student organisations as an initial step. He added that the meeting discussed the need to remain cautious and learn from the experience of the previous Ducsu election, particularly to avoid a recurrence of flaws and controversies.

The meeting also discussed possible procedures for holding a transparent election, taking into account the observations, opinions and objections of all stakeholders.

However, the university’s annual budget currently contains no separate allocation for the upcoming Ducsu election. Asked about the budget, a hall provost said the matter was not discussed in detail.

The meeting came hours after the DU VC met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at around 9:30am today, where the Ducsu election was among several issues discussed. Sources said the prime minister gave instructions on how to move forward with the election.

The current Ducsu committee assumed office on September 14, 2025. According to the Ducsu constitution, the committee has a one-year tenure. If a new election is not held within that period, the committee will automatically stand dissolved after 90 days.
