DU suspends 3 teachers over allegations of opposing July Uprising

Dhaka University has decided to temporarily suspend three teachers over allegations of opposing the July Uprising, based on recommendations from a university-formed investigation committee.

The suspended teachers are Prof Dr M Wahiduzzaman and Prof Dr Muhammed Mahbubur Rahman of the Institute of Education and Research, and Prof Dr Mashiur Rahman of the Department of Sociology.

The decisions were taken at a Syndicate meeting last night, said Acting Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed.

The teachers, however, denied the allegations and accused the university administration of politically motivated harassment and denying them due process.

Prof Mashiur said the measures were aimed at "suppressing teachers with progressive views". He denied allegations that he had encouraged attacks on students during the July Uprising or supported any order to attack them.

He also denied allegations that he had spoken against students during a talk show.

“If they can produce any evidence regarding the allegations brought against me, I will resign myself,” he said.

Prof Wahiduzzaman termed the decision “extreme injustice, falsehood and arbitrariness”. He said he had not been given an opportunity to present witnesses or cross-examine those who testified against him.

“I requested this opportunity, but the university did not call me. Despite repeatedly sending letters, I was not allowed to appear at the hearing. I strongly protest and condemn this on behalf of persecuted teachers across Bangladesh,” Wahiduzzaman said.

Prof Mahbubur said he had supported students during the movement and helped detained students secure their release. He warned that continued punitive measures could severely damage the university's academic environment.
