AL central office to get new building
The ruling Awami League is going to get a modern and spectacular party central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital as it decided to reconstruct it.
Syed Ashraful Islam, party general secretary, yesterday made the announcement after a meeting at party president's Dhanmondi office and requested party's front and like-minded organisations to evacuate their offices from the old building by May.
"The demolition process will start from June 1 and the construction will begin in September, which is likely to be completed within two years," he said.
Ashraf, also the public administration minister, informed that party chief Sheikh Hasina on April 6 approved the design of the multi-storeyed building.
The party bought some adjacent lands earlier and currently owns four decimals of land on Bangabandhu Avenue, a property worth Tk 4.75 crore, according to AL income expenditure statement submitted to the election commission.
Ashraf said the existing building is linked to the country's history and heritage and emotions of party leaders and activists as well. "But nothing lasts forever. The country is moving forward and so is the party, thus we are constructing a modern building," he said.
