CU, RU teachers announce demos against proposed govt payscale

City Desk

Teachers of different public universities have announced separate programmes in protest of the new proposed payscale.

Chittagong University Teachers Association yesterday announced a one-day work abstention to be observed on Sunday, according to our CU correspondent.

The decision was made at a meeting of the association on Wednesday.

They demanded that the government revise the eighth payscale and reinstate the time scale and selection grade, which would put senior professors in the same level as senior secretaries, said a press release signed by Cuta President Abul Manchur and General Secretary SM Khasrul Alam Quddusi.

The organisation termed the eighth payscale "discriminatory" as it, after abolishing the selection grade, created two special levels for "senior secretary" and "secretary" that put them two levels above the teachers.

The teachers threatened to launch tougher demonstrations if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University Teachers Association has also announced a work abstention for Sunday as well as a sit-in to be observed on the same day, reports our RU correspondent.

They will observe work abstention from 8:00am till 2:00pm, and observe the sit-in before the senate building from 10:00am till noon, said a press release signed by Ruta General Secretary Dr Rezaul Karim Badal.

However, department that have exams on the day are exempted from the protest programme.
