Demand for HC circuit bench in Ctg reiterated

Lawyers, rights activists and other eminent personalities yesterday reiterated their demand for establishing a circuit bench of the High Court in Chittagong city for quick disposal of cases.

At a roundtable, jointly organised by Chittagong Peshajibi Parishad, and Bangladesh Manabadhikar Commission, Chittagong Chapter, in Chittagong Press Club auditorium, speakers also urged all to wage a movement to realise the demand.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a letter in 2011 expressed interest to establish a circuit bench in Chittagong, said Chittagong district Public Prosecutor advocate Abul Hashem.

Hashem, also the convener of High Court-er Circuit Bench Bastobayan Parishad, Chittagong, urged the government and chief justice to take proper initiative to establish a circuit bench in the port city.

Chittagong Press Club's General Secretary Mohsin Chowdhury said for filing a writ petition or a bail petition, justice seekers have to rush to the capital which is not only a waste of time but also is a financial burden.

Bangladesh Bar Council's Member advocate Ibrahim Hossain Babul and Prof Sikander Chowdhury of Chittagong University also spoke.
