The High Court yesterday directed the government to stop hill cutting at Dinarpur of Habiganj, and to take appropriate legal steps against people responsible for cutting hills there.

Responding to a writ petition, the HC asked authorities concerned of the government to submit a report to this end before it in two weeks through the registrar.

It also issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why cutting hills should not be declared illegal.

The court came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

Petitioner's lawyer Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star that some local influential people have reportedly been cutting hills at Dinarpur under Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj in violation of the environment protection law and the constitution.
