Nor'wester wreaks havoc on Sylhet city
Heavy storm rampaged through Sylhet city yesterday morning and brought normal lives of its residents to a virtual standstill, destroying houses and power connections in the city.
With earths piled around the trunks of trees being loosened due to continuous rain and water seepage from Friday night, many of the large, old trees fell on houses and structures in different areas, leaving at least 3 residents critically injured.
The injured including Shamim Ahmed of Nayasarak area and Jal Biswash Nantu of Christian Mission area were admitted to different hospitals.
Meanwhile, at Shahi Eidgah, another uprooted tree fell on a power line, halting power supply to the city.
Sources at the local electricity distribution office said it would take hours to re-establish the connections.
Enamul Habib, chief executive officer of Sylhet City Corporation, said they were estimating the loss caused by the storm and taking measures to get things back on track.
