Defeated UP chairman candidate arrested

Police arrested a defeated chairman candidate of Ruhea Union Parishad (UP) in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila from Ramnath village on Sunday on charge of obstructing government officials from discharging duty at a polling centre during May 7 election in the UP.

The arrestee is local BNP leader Golam Mostafa, a resident of the village.

The law enforcers also arrested three other BNP men -- Akhter Hossain, president of ward unit of the party, its vice president Md Biplob and activist Abdul Malek -- from the area. 

Police said the supporters of Golam Mostafa encircled Mondoladam Government Primary School centre, demanding declaration of the results of the centre, fearing that the result of the UP polls would be changed.

They also obstructed election officials and law enforcers performing their duty.

Later on May 12, the presiding officer of the polling centre, filed a case, accusing over 2000 people in this connection, said Officer-in-Charge of Ruhea Police Station Khan Md Shahrier.

The arrestees were produced before a court which sent them to jail, said the OC.
