Students of a school and two colleges formed a human chain in Nimnagar Balubari area of the district town yesterday, demanding a ban on plying of unauthorised  battery-run three-wheelers as a college girl was killed by the vehicle the day before.

The dead is Pritilata Roy, 19, an HSC first year student of Dinajpur Government Women's College, and daughter of Dhirendranath Roy of Naniatikar village in Chirirbandar upazila.

Pritilata was hit by a three-wheeler while she was crossing the road in front of her college on Monday noon. She later died at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Terming the road accident as killing, students of Dinajpur Collegiate Girls' School, Dinajpur Government Women's College and Dinajpur Government College jointly organised the programme on the road in front of Dinajpur Government Women's College in the morning.

Later, Mayor of Dinajpur municipality Mohammad Jahangir, cultural activists Mainuddin Chiste, Ashish Kumar Dutta Babla, Tarequl Islam Tarek and others also joined the human chain.

The participants also threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme in the district if their demand was not met immediately.

During the human chain, the students of Dinajpur Government College students vandalised a passenger bus.

Protesting the attack, the bus drivers blocked Dinajpur-Phulbari road in front of Dinajpur Polytechnic Institute in the town for hours.

Contacted, Abdul Bari, traffic inspector of Dinajpur, said they will take decision immediately whether the three-wheelers will ply the road in the district or not.
