Extortionist threatens Chuadanga DC

Our Correspondent, Kushtia

A caller in the name of outlawed Sarbahara Party yesterday demanded Tk 10 lakh from the deputy commissioner (DC) of Chuadanga.

The caller introducing himself as Major (retd) Zia, a leader of the outfit, made the demand and threatened to kill the DC's kids if the money is not paid, according to the GD lodged by Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiqul Islam of Chuadanga Sadar Police Station on Sunday night.

DC Saima Yunus received the phone at about 2:49pm when she was returning to Chuadanga from Khulna after attending a meeting there, the GD mentioned.

"The caller demanded that the DC pay the money for treatment of his men [Sarbahara activists] in India. He also threatened to abduct the DC's kids and kill them if the money is not given," the GD said.

After returning to Chuadanga, the DC talked to high police officials in the district.

Contacted over phone, DC Saima Yunus admitted the matter.

She, however, declined to say more in this regard and suggested this correspondent to talk to police.

Tozammel Haq, officer-in-charge of Chuadanga Sadar Police Station, said police are trying to trace out the caller.
